Draft Rep. Rangel first

The military draft is rearing its ugly head in the news again.

New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel says he sees his idea, reinstating the draft, as a way of deterring politicians from launching wars.

Here's a quote from Rangel: "There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way."

Is he crazy, high, or just kidding? Much as I hate to admit it, I'm old enough to remember the draft. I knew young men who were drafted. I had family members who sweated out the lottery. It was agony. It is NOT RIGHT to do this. It's right down there with slavery on the list of despicable practices. And if they had an ample supply of young bodies to send off to war, our politicians would be MORE, not LESS likely to place them in harm's way. Does this idiot not remember Viet Nam?

Oh, he also thinks our troop levels are insuffient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea, and Iraq. So he's just contradicted himself.

Leave soldiering to soldiers, not to scared eighteen year old kids.
