Hot date

I had a rare date with my husband yesterday, and it was truly special.

First we had dinner at Giovanni's in Interlochen. I had a very nice golden margarita, but dinner was mediocre. The chicken was barely warm and the veggies were mushy.

Then it was off to Interlochen Center for the Arts for a concert by KT Tunstall. We were there a bit ahead of showtime, so we walked a bit, watched some marching band action at the Academy, then found some food tents set up near the auditorium. We made an excellent dessert of Moomer's ice cream, voted best in the country on Good Morning America.

The show was at Kresge auditorium. We had great seats in section 6, a little more than halfway back in the section. Kresge is a roofed, open-air building in a beautiful setting at the edge of a lake. We had a nice breeze and a view of the sunset through the trees.

Martha Wainwright, sister of Rufus, opened the show. She has wit, a strong voice and skillz with the guitar, but I would have liked to see a band back her up. It was just her with a guitar. She also has a weird habit of lifting her left leg, which reminded me of the Captain Morgan's pose, or perhaps a dog marking territory. I found myself wanting her to be done. Still, you have to appreciate a song like "Bloody Motherfucking Asshole."

After Martha and a break, KT and her band took the stage. KT is tiny and adorable. She wore a sparkly blue tank top, jeans and boots, and her hair in a ponytail. She joked with the audience ("It's hard to believe it gets cold up here. But I hear it does. Spectacularly so.") and got us to do a front-to-back of the auditorium (as opposed to side-to-side) wave. And the music was fabulous. It was great to see her moving like she does in her videos.

We were all on our feet for "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" which she started without the band, just her with a guitar. About halfway through the band came out and joined her, and really rocked it. She closed the show with "Suddenly I See" and impressed the hell out of me by taking up some sticks and doing some percussion. Then, of course, there was an encore.

Excellent night out.
