Variant Frequencies

Dragon*Con

Wow.

Dragon*Con is BIG. It happens in downtown Atlanta at four, count 'em four hotels, the kind with the elevators that go up the side of the building and give me raging vertigo. There were three dealer rooms and an art room, that's how big it is. In the famous folk's room were people from Firefly, Star Trek, LOTR, B5, horror films, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, and more. I got no autographs, but it was fun to walk around and gawk.

Many, many writers. I not only got to meet FAMOUS WRITERS like JC Hutchins, Scott Sigler, Tee Morris, JF Lewis, Evo Terra, Mur Lafferty, Michael Stackpole, and more; I got to hang out and party with them. And they are all nice folks.

And music. We got to meet Abney Park up close and personal and see them in concert, which was seriously awesome. They seemed happy to hear that our little podcast has turned some people on to their music and won them some devoted fans. Also there was Cruxshadows, who we didn't see but the sounds coming from their booth were impressive. I will be checking them out. The Brobdingnagian Bards entertained us at parties, at the Parsec Awards, and in concert.

Did I mention Parsecs? Pictures here. For the third year running, Variant Frequencies is a Parsec Award winner. No one else can make that claim. This time we won for Best Magazine or Anthology Podcast. We consider this a huge honor. [info]matt_wallace should've been there. A lot of work goes into our podcast, and the recognition gives us an enormous boost. We are deeply grateful. We have plans for more cool stuff coming up.

I was delighted to meet and spend time with John Cmar and Laura Burns. These two amazed me with intelligence and wit. They're also among the nicest people I know. Cmar has one of the best voices in podcasting. Check out his reading of Spired at the VF website. I have a feeling the residents at Sinai tremble in fear.

Also enjoyed the company of PG Holyfield, another published author, and his annoyingly beautiful wife Liza. We got to spend a little time with Jonathan Gillespie and his lovely wife Michelle. Stylish Dree gave us cuts into the insanely long registration line, for which we will always be grateful. It was a treat to spend time with her and hubby Command Line. TD-0013 is funny as hell.

I can't begin to name all the cool people we met, talked with, hung out with.

One of the things Dragon*Con is about is costumes. These ranged from a thong and bodypaint (seriously) to full-coverage, elaborately crafted and constructed costumes, from sexy to grotesque. Many superheroes and villains, stormtroopers, monsters, pirates, aliens, fairies, video game characters. Jayne hats, Joker faces, steampunk goggles, Browncoats, corsets (and boobage pressed into some unnatural shapes), Legos, swords, tentacles, fur, platform boots.

And oh. Men in kilts.

Lots of entertaining, informative, and inspiring panels. Kind and encouraging words from writers I admire. Fun parties. Some of the best beer EVER. Ditto food, especially the Indian dinner with good friends the last evening we were there. I can only hope all the walking made up for the food.

I had a blast. It's good to be home, I missed the kids. I'm fired up to write. Will definitely have to do this again.
